It is hard to imagine a ten year old boy living in a forest all his life with a crude mud shelter as his home. Alabama Moon lives with his father, Oli Blake in the forests of Alabama. His mom died when she was two. They hunt and grow their own food, make their own clothes and survive with nature's gifts. When Moon's father dies suddenly, he is left on his own, and thus begins the trials of this young boy as he is 'caught' and taken to a boys' institution which he escapes from with two other young men. Moon knows everything there is to know about survival in the woods, but knows nothing about humanity, friendship or the world. His story is heart-breaking, heart-tugging and heart-warming.

Great survival story. Those who like "Hatchet" and "Call it Courage" should read this book.

I particularly liked the author's exploration of government and freedom. I think Watt Key had a balanced and interesting approach to showing the pros and cons of goverment and the pros and cons of complete freedom.
