This book is okay. But I believe that it's too short.

CIP Summary: "Two Black girls living in the North are proud of their family's beautiful new Cadillac until they take it on a visit to the South and encounter racial prejudice for the first time."

I had a hard time getting into this story at first. I thought it was going to be 43 pages of the same repetitive conversation. It wasn't until the family went for the long drive to visit 'lois family down south in Mississippi where the story finally got interesting. The reader can tell how the scenery and the times change as the family travels from up North to down South. You can feel the racial prejudices thicken as the family travels.

This is a good book to share with Intermediate students. This book definitely paints of picture of how times used to be back in the 1950s.

I enjoyed reading this book. I liked the overall message of the book about the importance of family. I also found it interesting to see the young girl's perspective of segregation. I was a little disappointed that the book was so short. I think it was powerful for its length, but could have been better if there was more time for character and plot development.
