a shelfari friend suggested this author and i was delighted to find that she writes from her familys and her own experiences. I tried this one out becasue it was a short read so i could familarize myself with the author and now i will be graduating to some of her other larger books.

I read this novella with a guided reading group that I am teaching. It's been a while since I read ROLL OF THUNDER, HEAR MY CRY, and it was a joy to revisit with the Logan family in this poignant story of courage and integrity.

At 64 pages, this book is extremely short, but it packs a lot of punch in those pages. Its story gives readers a sample of how parts of white America treated their black neighbors – even black families who owned their own land. Somehow, this story is lyrical, historical, and gripping all at the same time. Readers of all abilities will enjoy this book. Its short length will be especially attractive to reluctant readers, and it might even encourage them to read more. I strongly recommend this book. CW (1975, 64 pages)

Cassie keeps us intrigued as she develops an appreciation for nature up close and personal where "X" marks the spot.
