Here we have a cast of characters that focuses on Treva, a wife and mother but mainly a career lawyer, who has her world pulled out from underneath her when they make a move for her husband's sake and she can't get her career going again. She is "forced" into a Bible study by her sister with 4 other women who she can't stand, barely tolerates being a mom and resents (and rightfully so) her own mother. Throughout the course of the book we get to sit in on the Bible study of Ephesians (very insightful), deal with many cultural issues (abortion, incest, modesty, career vs. family, etc...) as well as many spiritual issues (forgiveness, our Father's love for us, forgiveness, power of prayer, forgiveness, importance of the Word of God, forgiveness, etc...) and oh, did I mention forgiveness? There are too many things to even point out in a little 'ol review, but I was blessed by reading this book. I highly suggest finding a copy of this for yourself as I will be re-reading this one over and over. It is labeled as "African American Fiction", but I fail to see how the themes of forgiveness and God's love don't speak to everyone. Excellent book!

“This book was a real treat to read. I enjoyed Kimberly Tate's view on being placed in Heavenly Places. You learn to fall in love with all the characters as they are developed. Treva is seeking for being someone important in her world since her childhood was less than desirable as she grew up in the 'color makes a difference era'. Even her own mother put color above everything causing great friction between mother/daughter. Hezekiah is such a jewel anyone could wish their spouse was as good to them. You'll just love him. Then there are the girls in the Bible study group. Each with their own personality and skeletons in their closest that come out and are developed. Forgiveness is always a must in every relationship. There is Darlene, Hezekiah's mother, oh, how everyone would love for a mother-in-law so kind and tender and loving so unconditionally. Key is friendship no matter what and forgiveness a must. Well, you'll just have to grab a book and read for yourself. I know you'll find yourself in one of the many characters. Tate provides a readers guide. Yes, this book could be used in a book club reading. Would be an excellent choice. I think almost every women's issue is touched on. You can read the first chapter at my book blog site

“Heavenly Places by Kimberly Cash Tate is a powerful novel of the lies that we can believe about howselves and how that separates us from God. Treva Langston looks like she has it all from the outside. Career as a high-priced attorney, married to a handsome college professor, Hezekiah, three beautiful daughters named Faith, Joy, and Hope. But when her husband gets a job near Washington DC, it means giving up the job she loves and returning to the place where she grew up. Treva's entire life and self-esteem is shaken when after moving to DC, she can't find a job and ends up home every day. Her sister, Jillian, invites her to participate in a Bible study with some other women, and while she initially fights it with every fiber of her stubborn being, she keeps attending class after class until the truth of God's love starts to sink into her soul. Treva's mother, Patsy, does all she can to shatter Treva's newfound sense of balance by reminding her that because of her dark skin, she is not beautiful, and therefore her only value is in having a career. Tate shines in her debut novel in portraying a woman who insists on living her life on her terms and ends up having to face God on His. Treva is a delicate character, so wrapped up in her own problems and hurt that she doesn't notice anyone else's pain, but Tate makes her sympathetic and entirely likeable. Her growth throughout the book is visible, though never forced. Much of the book focuses on a Bible study of the book of Ephesians, and Tate teaches an amazing class about the gifts that God has given us in His love, and the promises He's made. As Treva learns about God's love, the reader can't help but do the same. Inspiring, moving, and fascinating, it's a terrific first novel!”

I did enjoy revisiting my east coast roots, and I love the reading guide full of discussion questions at the end of the novel for use by book groups. But I can’t say that I would recommend this novel.”

Treva Langston's family has taken it to a whole new level and it has effected everything in her life: her family, her career, her self esteem and more importantly her faith in God. It takes a loving husband, Hezekiah, her sister Jillian and the mismatched assortment of women in her bible study group to help her through the issues and see herself as the beautiful woman she is. I read Heavenly Places thinking of the women in my life it could minister to, when I discovered I was the one being blessed by reading it. A must read for all women.

“Meet Treva Langston – a beautiful and intelligent woman who is married to a God-fearing man who loves her, and mother to three wonderful daughters who adore her. So why doesn't her family bring her joy?
Well, Treva has been plagued with self-doubt her entire life. Everything she has ever tried to accomplish has always been viewed through the lens of 'color' thanks to her mother. For a while, Treva
was able to escape her feelings of inadequacy and find her worth in a very successful career in the Midwest. Now she's jobless and returning to her hometown filled with painful memories and a mother who hasn't changed a bit. It will be her sister's gentle nudging to join a women's home Bible Study group she facilitates that literally changes
her life. The transformative power of God's word and the "heavenly places" HE promises in her studies, helps her to forgive, value friends and family, and discover once and for all that those promised 'heavenly places' have been right there with her all along.
To every woman who has ever doubted she is fearfully and wonderfully made, 'Heavenly Places' by Kimberly Cash Tate is a novel for you!”
