I've never really been one for the fae (I'm more of a werewolves and vampires girl myself), but for the first half of the book I was turning pages constantly. I really enjoyed it. In the last half of the book, my enjoyment started to wane until it was more of a chore to read rather than a joy. For me (maybe this isn't true for others who've read this), the story became so compacted and detailed it was like trying to peel two pieces of clear tape apart that have folded onto each other. Everything just kind of blended together after a while, and it got to be more trouble than it was worth.
I finished reading it and am glad I did so just for having that accomplishment of finishing. I wish the ending was different, though. Creatively I can understand why Stiefvater left it that way, but ...well. I just wish it turned out differently.”
“As a teenager constantly on the search for new original books, I was smiling the moment I noticed that Shiver (which I found to be a bit lacking in the plot department) was not Stiefvater's only novel. Skimming through the general synapse, it did not seem that wonderful, but I decided to give it a read anyways. Diedre--the main character-- is instantly likable, I was immediately drawn-in from the first page with the nice touches of music lurking in the seems from time to time mixing in with the fairie aura. Then Luke comes into the picture, too often the male characters in teen romance books are too frustrating to say the least, but Luke simply adds to the plot, guiding Diedre as she slowly realizes the world around her is changing. Among the pages of Lament, I was amazed to find none of those dull filler chapters which leave my eyes skimming through the sentences hoping for the plot to pick-up again. The entire book was nearly impossible to put down until the last page had been read. Four stars, and a guarantee that I will read the sequel as soon as I can find a copy. ”

She is in grave danger though because the play toys of the fey typically don't survive because the Faerie queen gets jealous and has them murdered by heartless assasins. :) Yeah, sick right? Ending sort of just abrubtly stopped without me really understanding what was happening. It was sloppy. My only complaint.”

Once again, I enjoyed this author's vivid, funny, and lyrical writing style. And, once again, I felt that the story dragged on a bit towards the end. Unlike her most recent novel, Shiver, the ending of this one is unsatisfying, though I did find her secondary characters better developed in this novel than in Shiver. I think readers of romance and fantasy will enjoy this book, though middle school readers should know there is some rather naughty language. (And on that note, I would love to suggest this book to my 7th grade girls, but I can't because of the f-bombs. Honestly, I don't see how they develop the tone or characters or plot. Sometimes, strong situations call for strong language but not so here.To this reader, it comes across as the most lame kind of pandering to the adolescent reader who can't wait to try this language out for herself.)”
