I liked it. The concept of people producing magic as if it were part of their physiology is certainly interesting. The plot itself was simple and at times predictable, but entertaining nonetheless. Personally, it was obvious to me that the author is female (or at least the writing style is very different from that of every male author I've read). A lot of detail was given on ruminations on other people's personalities, emotions, flirting, etc. that one doesn't see in most male authors' works.

On the whole, though, the book came across to me as more of a prelude. Certainly there's a lot of potential here for follow-ups.

I would like to add that I quickly fell in love with the books protagonist, though I'm hard-pressed to call her that as the focus kept moving from one character to another. I certainly expected a lot more from her, particularly since she was a natural and therefore had a lot of potential for magic, very little of it was realized in the whole story.

My husband loves Canavan's Black Magicians Trilogy and encouraged me to read that series and this one. I read The Magician's Apprentice before the other 3. I think I may have enjoyed it more if I'd read this one later. This book is actually set about 600 years before the other series so it's not required that you read the others first...I just think it would have helped my overall view of the book.

That said, this book was a bit disappointing. You start out following Tessia and quickly add in Lord Dakon, Apprentice Jayan, Hanara the Slave and MUCH later Stara. The view point changes were confusing and unnecessary for the most part. The main characters personalities felt very similar, I would have liked to have seen more character development and variation.

I really did not enjoy the book, it felt very long and the epilogue left more questions then answers. I realize this is the start of a new trilogy, hopefully the next ones are better.

I really wish there was a 1/2 star option as this would get only 2.5 stars. I didn't feel right doing 2 stars, but 3 is a stretch.

This book is definitely worth reading, but it doesn't have to be at the top of your priority list. If you're in to that sort of thing, all of the magical theory (despite being fictional) is fascinating.
Some parts of the book are a bit predictable, but not in a bothersome way.
I particularly enjoyed the sections about Stara and the women's protection society called The Traitors.

I could just repeat it, but read the Anna's review on http://www.shelfari.com/books/4075329/The-Magician-s-Apprentice/bookthread?reviewid=1054432 and let me just say I completely agree with her.

It's well written book, but too "Been there, seen that".
