This drags in places, but even after 40 years, is still pretty interesting. The saddest thing is when you realize humans have maintained the same "subjugating nature" attitude, and continued to make the exact same mistakes in the intervening 4 decades since the original publication. Hubris, anyone?

Silent Spring, and the concepts contained within it, are often credited with launching the current environmental movement. Not only was the book a New York Times best seller, but it inspired public and governmental concerns regarding pesticides and environmental pollution. The book argued that the unexamined usage of pesticides had both long and short-term effects on all life, including human. Carson’s title, Silent Spring, is meant to evoke a season in which no bird song is heard, due to the staggering effects of insect poison. Carson’s work helped to facilitate the eventual ban of the popular pesticide DDT in the United States.

One of my favorite books ever written! Carson instigated such a tour-de-force for the environmental movement. Also, the book is very compellingly written.

The science can be a little difficult to digest, but the situation Rachel Carson describes are downright scary and give great cause for thought about what we are currently doing to our land and the food we eat. She gives a bit of hope at the end-makes me curious about what we are currently doing with insecticides and managing insect and plant pests. I'll never see weed killer the same again.
