I read this book for postcolonial literature class. I didn't like (almost) any of the books, but this is a novel that is at least easy to read. There were some funny stories in it too.

The book reminds me much of the old timers and the past of Goa. It appears colonialists retain a magnified sense of eccentricity. They were a great sourse of ammusement and sometimes embarrasment. Fondest memories of the times were at the huge dining table where 20 or more people would be cross talking religion, philosohy, politics, poetry and scandal, each involved in several simultaneous conversations.
Ondaatje's family was a trip down memory lane.

Ondaatje is sometimes criticized for romaticising Sri Lanka...do you agree?
