    I thought it was a very fine idea to travel and write for the media...enjoy and make mega bucks at the same time. After this book...not too sure - about the mega bucks and enjoyment as well!

    The book delivers as advertised: a tale of superficial soul-searching, gross excess, and the trials and tribulations (many of which are self-induced) while conducting travel research in Brazil for Lonely Planet. I liked elements of the book and found its insights into travel writing and the benefits/drawbacks on guidebooks of particular interest. But the the author's Gonzo antics and quirky travel companions were not enough to make this a particularly great travel essay.
