No matter what one thinks of the war, these vignettes are heart-breaking. Very well written.

The writing is simple, yet descriptive and does not get maudlin. Also very neutral regarding politics and the war.

Picks a few families that Major Beck worked with and developing their stories in several phases.

A seldom read or seen subject that truly does matter!

This was by far one of the most moving books I've ever read. We all think we know what happens, have seen in movies about the knock, know the pain and grief the families go through, but I honestly didn't have a clue the emotions on the other side of the door. I've always thought we were blessed that men and wome volunteer for the military, but I had no idea how blessed until I read this book.

This is all about the "final salute" given to fallen servicemen, and as such was well written, but didn't have much to hold it together other than that. It was OK, but because I have not gone through such things, it didn't connect with me. I come from a pacifist background, so my subliminal thinking is "Why glorify someone who died for the sake of killing and fighting others?" I know that's parochial, and that many people think this is the height of self-sacrifice and worthy of all honor. It did teach me about the process that a body and family go through in this circumstance. Focused on one man, one family in one small town in --Montana? Not sure.

Yes it's sad but it's a part of the Iraq war that people don't often hear about. It's written sensitively about the lives of the families who've lost loved ones and the Marines assigned to deliver the news. I met the author who made a visual presentation of this book to a captive audience of student journalists.

I give this book 50 Stars for each state in the country represented in this war! It's so powerful!!

Hard to know where to begin about this book. I thought "Dewey, The Library Cat" was my book of the year, but this is now my book of the year. This is about Major Steve Beck who is a casulty notification officer. The book tells the story of the men who paid the ultimate price for our freedom and the families they left behind. "Final Salute" is so filled with emotion that at times I just had to stop reading. It got to me. You will not forget the men and the families you read about in this book. I hate to admit it, but I read about men killed and forget all the people it affects. This jolted me back to reality! I'll never look at death casulties like I did before. My heart goes out to their families who are now in my prayers. I salute all our service people. Maybe Christmas is not the time to read about this, but then again, it probably is to know that people are out there especially hurting at this time of celebrating our Savior's birthday. You must read this book. God bless the USA and thank you service men and women!! May God bring you home safely.

You need to read this book. Even if you (like me!) "support the troops," you have no idea. This book is about how the military cares for its own, its fallen. There is pain, empathy, nobility, heroism here. If you can read this book without crying, you're a robot. Read this book. You will be forever changed.
