The Year of Disappearances: A Novel

by Susan Hubbard

It was the year of disappearances. The honeybees were the first to go.
Ariella Montero is no stranger to the dark side of life. Half human, half vampire, she spent her first thirteen years in exile from both societies. I got a little confused reading this book. In the end most of the things added up but there was stil some things left unanswered so I hope that there is another book to this series.

Ari is a great character, "fourteen going on forty" indeed. I love the fact that she is smart, and that she has such a wholesome family (if you can say that about vampires). That said, I was disappointed in this sequel. The story seemed to jump around. Characters from previous books reappeared briefly but were re-evaluated dramatically in their short appearances (bad guy = really good! good guy = really bad!) More kids die--which ordinarily would make this a book I'd quit reading--but their deaths are not sensationalized, which I appreciate, but then it was tough to believe that the townspeople would suspect and hate Ari to the extent that they do. And the ending had a "deus ex machina" flavor, with important plot conflicts resolved offstage. The book remains a worthwhile read, and I'm sure I'll read the next installment in this series too . . . but I think book one was better.

I have to say, I was a little disappointed with this sequel to the Society of S; but still a worthwhile read.

This sequel to "The Society of S" is equal in most every way. It is a book that is clean of swearing and any morality issues. The story continues to follow Ari and her family as she learns more about her new Vampire world and grows up a little bit. Hope there is a book 3! Susan Hubbard has a talent for combining mystery, and yet thoughtful text. Ari's family grow more interesting with every chapter. A must read!

I found Susan Hubbard's books shortly after reading Stephene Meyer's Twilight series. I was skeptical because I thought that there was really nothing left that could be done with various types of supernatural creatures. I am so happy to say that I was wrong. This is the second book in a series. The imagined world in the books is subtle and intriguing and the characters are drawn with skill and imagination.
