It had such promise, but it was just too knowing, too many winks at the reader, too much crammed in as though Rathbone wanted to tell us all just how clever he is, no, really, look at all this stuff he knows. I didn't enjoy it half as much as I wanted to, and found it hard to make myself read to the end.
