I've come to enjoy Lori Handeland's Nightcreature series. So when I learned she was starting a brand new series, I was one of those who was lined up on wish lists for that moment when the book would hit the shelves. But a miracle occurred. I somehow actually found a copy of "Any Given Doomsday"...

I could not finish this book, even with fifty pages to go. The first half of the book is excellent. Elizabeth Phoenix is a snarky character, and I enjoy her wisecracks.

However, about 200 pages in, all the sex starts. That's when I realized I would never put this in a high school...

I started and finished this book in one sitting. The story flowed really well and I really enjoyed it. I am looking forward to the next one.

Gritty, gutsy Lizzy Phoenix is a part-time bartender, ex-cop and former street urchin. Now 25, she's lost the only woman who cared enough about her to make a difference in her life. Ruthie, gray-haired and wise, took her off the streets and gave her some direction. At Ruthie's house, Lizzy met Jimmy Sanducci, who became the one true love of her life, but betrayed her. With Ruthie's death, however, she realizes what she and Jimmy truly are. Jimmy, a demon-killer and Lizzy, a seer, together they have to find a way to stop the demons from taking over man-kind before it is too late. When Jimmy, half-human, half-vampire crosses over to the dark side, Lizzy must find a way to draw him back. This is book #1 in The Phoenix Chronicles.
Thanks to Goodreads and St. Martin Paperbacks for the ARC.

Full disclosure: I don't usually read this genre, but I received an advance copy.

Fun and quick read. As I read it I kept recalling scenes and characters from Dead Until Dark/True Blood and Heroes. If you like these types of books (which I do) it is worth reading. My only criticism is how sarcastic the main character is. Even when she discovers things about herself and her role in humanity, her wit/sarcasm comes off more as a character flaw and turn off to the reader. I lost respect for her as she continued to respond with cynical and smarmy comments despite her knowing the outcomes that could result from them. It might be easy to directly compare her attitude to that of the X-Men's Wolverine. Even that gets very tiring.

I know others have commented on the sex in the book. Not the typical reader, I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised to see so much sex and that it didn't trail off beyond the book's pages and that it was usually controlled by the lead female character.

I enjoyed this book, and I read it mostly because I got an early copy of it. With that said, it's not something I would normally read. For a while, about two months or more, I actually put it down and didn't plan on finishing it. Then I ran out of things to read. I figured I could give finishing it one more try. Surprisingly, I actually got sucked in and finished it. I'm not sure if I'll seek out the rest of the series or not, but if I come across them I might want to read them.

This was an OK book. Can't say that I'd have run out to buy it, but I got it free. I liked the premise of the book, but I have to say that I'm no prude or anything, but the sex in this book takes away from the book itself I found. It seems like everything revolved around her having sex with two of the characters and of course she had to 'get' something from it too. I don't think I'll be running out to get the rest of this series, but if you got it free like I did it will keep you interested throughout the book.

Ex-cop Elizabeth Phoenix has never been fond of her bursts of paranormal intuition but she trusts the voice telling her to visit Ruthie, her foster mother. Near dead from a brutal attack, Ruthie has just enough strength to tell Lizbeth "It's up to you. The final battle begins now." Elizabeth has no idea what this means but Jimmy, the cops' main suspect and her former lover, seems to be involved. When Ruthie appears in her dreams, Elizabeth slowly realizes she is already involved in a battle against monsters for the survival of humanity. Now if only she could keep all the different monsters straight! With a sarcastic tongue she can barely control and powers she's only beginning to comprehend, Elizabeth fumbles her way through a world filled with power, beasties, and intense sexual attraction in her first attempt to stall doomsday.

Any Given Doomsday is a supernatural urban fantasy spanning Milwaukee, New Mexico, and Manhattan with an even mix of humor, sex, mystery, and danger. Handeland gradually parcels out the explication of her new world order and keeps the pace moving briskly. Contains occasional strong language, frequent sex, and violence.

WOW.....this is one freaky chick!!! The things she can do and the things she has yet to find out about that she can do....WOW!! This book is full of crazy monsters and beasts and things that go bump in the night....not to mention many pages of unbridled and unabashed sex encounters.....what a wild and charmed life Elizabeth Phoenix leads. This is a pretty intriguing story line that make you wonder what will happen next in Vol. 2...it was a fun read and I am looking forward to the next book.
