It has a different premise for a fantasy--a girl cursed to go mad at 18 unless she performs three impossible tasks based on the song "Scarborough Fair". Unfortunately, the characters were so annoyingly one dimensional, the dialogue to...” see full review » see other reviews » |

In order to break the cycle and save her unborn daughter, she has to complete three impossible, mystifying tasks described in her crazy mom's version of "Scarborough Fair."
Werlin tells this convoluted magical story in a way that makes it seem rational and realistic. Her characters are as well-developed as ever, and the relationships between them are wonderful and touching. Her writing's not the most elegant prose in the world, but the sincerity of her effort more than makes up for that.

“A family curse. That is why the mysterious Padraig Seeley is hanging around Lucy’s home. That is why her mother is the crazy bag lady who wanders by the track pushing her cart of bottles and singing. That is why Lucy is raped on prom night and pregnant at 18. Lucy has no idea that the women of her family are cursed to repeat this chain of events over and over and over. But thanks to a helpful diary written by her mother and some very strong foster parents and a sweet, protective boyfriend Lucy has better odds than the others at actually completing the three impossible tasks before her daughter is born.
I loved how strong and supportive Lucy’s family and friends were, but I felt the story focused too little on the actual impossible tasks and, personally, I think Lucy achieved them too easily. Though Lucy was supposed to be this strong-willed, independent girl the majority of the hard work in completing the tasks was done for her.
