“Ranger is a dog that has always been brutally abused by his owner, Gar Face. When a calico cat goes up to him one day without a trace of fear and begins to purr, they start an amazing friendship. He gives her a home underneath Gar Face's home, which they call the Underneath. The calico cat has kittens, who they name Puck and Sabine. Puck is the boy and Sabine is the girl. There is only one rule for them to follow: Never leave the underneath. But one day, when Puck leaves, life changes for them forever.
This book is actually pretty sad, and it makes me feel bad for the characters in the story even though they're not real! It's a really moving book, with a poetic edge to it, but the author knows how to keep it real. ”
“Absolutely enthralled with the creativity and writing style. Great Characters, awesome setting ... a real heart-tugger.”

This books tell three separate stories that eventually end up being intertwined by the end. Ranger is a bloodhound dog who lives under a porch and has a leash that lets him only go so far. He is abused and neglected by his owner Gar Face, who fled an abusive family and now lives alone. A pregnant calico cat wanders and finds Ranger underneath his porch. They instantly develop a loving friendship. The last part of the story is Grandma Moccasin, who is a water snake that has been buried in a jar under a pine tree for the last thousand years. There stories start to mend together when one of the calico cat’s kittens, Puck escapes the underneath.

The Underneath is about an unlikely family: a calico cat, her kittens, Puck and Sabine, and a lonely old hound named Ranger. The owner of Ranger, Gar Face, (or so he is called) has been mean and careless ever since his father mauled his face when he was a boy. That was when he ran away and took Ranger in as his dog. Ranger and the mother cat hide the kittens in the Underneath, the only safe haven in a forest of danger. If even a paw is seen by Gar Face that is not Ranger's, the owner of that paw will be taken and used as bait for a one hundred foot long alligator. Unfortunately, kittens are notoriously curious creatures, and that is just what happened. This book tells about the life, adventures and sufferings of two kittens named Puck and Sabine.”
