This book took me by surprise. The cover led me to think it would be some sort of animal adventure story, or talking animal fable. It wasn't. Part legend, part myth, part love story, it was lyrical, mysterious, moving and layered. The "underneath" refers to the area under the porch of a cabin out in the bayous of east Texas, and more. Who would have thought that a friendship could develop between a momma cat and a hound who becomes a surrogate father to her two kittens? This interesting story, set in the bayou in Louisiana, brings to life this friendship with very little dialogue, letting the descriptive tale set the pace and action.
