- Bertie: A brilliant 6 year old boy who lives at 44 Scotland St. with his overbearing and overprotective mother and laid-back father.
- Irene: Bertie's overbearing and overprotective mother, who is pregnant.
- Stuart: Bertie's father and Irene's husband.
- Matthew: A gentleman in his late 20's who owns a gallery, buys a distressed oatmeal sweater, and is convinced that no one fancies him.
- Leonie: A new friend of Matthew's who he meets in a bar, she's an architect who has great ideas for Matthew's flat.
- Angus Lordie: A gentleman who is friends with Domenica, and tries to befriend the woman staying in Domenica's flat, Antonia. He is always found with his dog, Cyril.
- Cyril: Angus Lordie's dog who has a small adventure.
- Domenica: A resident of 44 Scotland St., she is also an anthropologist who leaves Edinburgh for a number of months to study the pirates in Malacca Straits.
- Pat: An ex-resident of 44 Scotland St. and a student who works at the gallery for Matthew and has a new love interest.
- Big Lou: The owner of a coffee bar and frequently chats with Matthew and Angus Lordie as well as Eddie's girlfriend.
- Eddie: The boyfriend of Big Lou who is about to open a new restaurant.
- Dr Fairbairn: Bertie's psychologist who does not understand him.
- Mr O'Connor: A questionable friend of Stuart's who lives in Glasgow and has very interesting colleagues.
- Antonia: A new resident of 44 Scotland St., staying in Domenica's flat while she is away.
- Wolf: A student where Pat goes to school who seems to be interested in her.
