A 15-year-old girl has been viciously murdered and no one in the tranquil community of Seward Island, Washington, can imagine who the killer is. As the police begin an arduous search for suspects, the murder takes the people of Seward somewhere else: into their darkest prejudices and worst fears, and to a very human evil living in their midst.
