What started out as a typical high fantasy with more originality than you usually find in high fantasy novels these days has turned into an exciting series that not only features more and more originality but provides excellent character development and a cinematic pacing.
What makes me say cinematic is how Butcher has written the many battle scenes that have made up the last three novels. Butcher's descriptions are so detailed and vivid that you find yourself trying to picture them on a big screen like something out of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. More so than any of the other novels, Princeps' Fury features many scenes that harken back to Jackson's epic films.
However, what truly makes these novels so great are the characters and the detail Butcher has created around each one. As the main protaganist, Tavis is the most interesting of them all and with each successive novel the character has grown and developed in interesting ways. Beyond that these novels are filled with interesting characters that are never really what we assume them to be. This novel especially changed some opinions I had about a few of them.
With only one novel left in this great series I'm a little sad that we'll soon reach the end. Still, I have a lot of respect for an author who brings a series to a proper conclusion without dragging it on long past its time.”
“Awesome addition to the Codex Alera series. And, as always, Butcher leaves me cursing his name because I have to wait to see what happens next. I am really looking forward to the release of First Lord's Fury in November 2009.”

The whole series is a must read.”

It's a very good addition to the Codex Alera books, but it makes you crazy for First Lord's Fury as this one leaves a lot of plot open. It offers nice character progression though, something many fantasy authors are reluctant about.”
“Another fantastic read! I really wish it didn't feel so long between installments, but I know it's not really. :) I can't wait for the amazing conclusion!!!”
