"The Subtle Knife" takes the familiar characters from "The Golden Compass" and combines them with interesting new people in a sequel that is as fresh and entrancing as the original. Will Parry, Lyra's new companion who is introduced in this book, eventually acquires the "subtle knife" mentioned...

This second book feels a little slight compared to the first and less self contained. On the upside it moves much faster than the first one did and the metaphoric rebuking to religious fantasy becomes more obvious and intriguing. There were a few times in this book where I found it kind of silly, especially the scenes with the scientists but it was a fun book. I look forward to reading the third book in the series when I get around to it.

3*'s. Second book in the series. It was written for children, but I think it is more on the teenager level.

An excellent follow on. Was really surprised by this book actually. It doesn't just follow on the last it starts in a new world--our world. I remember when I started reading it, that I desperately wanted to return to the world of the first novel, but then slowly grew to love this book most of all.

Another interesting twist in the world between worlds. Always a fantastical adventure, though pulling a bit too close to boundaries that must remain untouched for some to function. Others enjoy it as it is, just another book, and continue on with life, uncaring of the messages within. But beware and be sure to remember that it is, just as it is, "a fiction book". A darkening of the first, the last ought to be thrilling!

Great middle book for the extraordinary trilogy. As compelling and engrossing as "The Golden Compass" and "The Amber Spyglass".
