Pullman is becoming a favorite of mine! Plots are interesting and intriguing. 16-year-old Sally unravels the mysteries of her father's death and her past.

I like this book so much. I first read it years ago but I never forgot about it. I am so glad that I found this book again, (Go Libraries!), and I am falling in love with all over again. This book has stayed with me because I love Victorian era books and mysteries.

I really enjoyed this book and I don't usually read or like murder mysteries. This, however, was highly well written and I really got into it. A great book! *****

This series is by "controversial" Philip Pullman, author of the Golden Compass series. However, this book has none of the "seriousness" of the Compass books and all of the fun! Set in a Victorian turn of the century setting, a mystery unravels around the mysterious ruby from the title. I couldn't put this book down! The twists and turns keep you guessing and you can't wait to see how things may unravel. Just like a great mystery that fits this genre, there are the good, the bad, and those inbetween who get all of the consequences they deserve.

I just read this book and thought it was pretty good. The problem with it was that information about Sally's history and the ruby wasn't given until the very end, so the readers didn't know anything until the very end. Overall, it was a pretty good book, however.

this book was about really a 4.5 star book, but it was not that bad so I gave it a five star instead of a four. Sally's story will take you by surprise!
