Very good book. I loved. Gripping mystery based in victorian london. The conclusion was a bit depressing though.

Pullman is a good story teller.

He tries to give his female character a more active and central role than the period would have allowed. It is as if he is trying to revisit the Victorian times and wishfully making it more equitable.

One can see that in his Dark Materials Trilogy too. Lyra's world is oppressive to women and the lower classes. But Lyra is a female protogonist, and she grows to be more and more progressive through the story.
