“Well, I finally finished this massive trilogy. I loved a lot of things about it. The story moved in directions that could not be predicted. My only other experience with recent children's fiction is Harry Potter, and those books are very structured. You know the time frame and what to expect (except for the last book). With His Dark Materials though, the plot lead me in directions that were strange and very entertaining.
I found that I liked the second protagonist (introduced in the second book) much better than the original protagonist, and was glad that so much of the second and third books focused on him. The secondary characters were also very well developed and really enjoyed their chapters.
I guess the big complaint about this series are the views it takes on religion. As I saw it, none of the characters really know anything about God, and the God that is worshipped is just an Angel that declared himself the creator. In that way, the book is a story that teaches you to not blindly follow any authority and to learn as much as you can and grown in that learning.
That said, I would not recommend this series for kids under the age of the main characters. The violence is graphic and a lot of the situations are adult. I, however, loved the imagination of the series, the characters, the plot twists, and the resolution (which I will not spoil).”
