Wow, these books get worse the more you read. How does a person go from leaving one world by a secret gate to 6 months later having a private army ready to go to war with God, and multiple worlds submitting to his will and word?

I need something upon which to hang my suspencion of disbelief, but this is author is too lazy to take the time to give it to me. I finished it, but I wish I could sue for the last time I spend on the last 1.5 books to be given back to me!

Are you talking about the 3rd book? If so, I am in complete agreement--it did an enormous disservice to the 1st and 2nd. Beginning the series, I figured in for some lame-ass fantasy series designed for Harry Potter fans. The fact that I was aware that one of the characters was a talking polar bear made this assumption very easy to make. Give Pullman this, though, he made that bear work for me. How could I drift into a novel with a preconception like that and drop it when the Aragornesque king returns to reclaim his ursine throne?
