After Louis Bayard bowled me over with The Pale Blue Eye, I had to take his previous novel, Mr. Timothy, for a spin, and what a ride it is. The title character is familiar to nearly every reader of English literature: Timothy Cratchit, Tiny Tim of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Now 23 years...

I love the Black Tower, so I was anxious to read this book by Bayard. His prose is wonderful, but this story is far more convoluted than the Black Tower. I found myself getting lost, and then bored. It is gory in sections, so be prepared for that. I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as the Black...

I loved this imagining of what might have happened to Tiny Tim as an adult. Not to everyone's taste, as this is a mystery/thriller and has some unpleasant plot points, but I thought the plot was engaging and was sincerely entertained by the writer's style. Clever, amusing, and even heartwarming. I think Dickens would approve.

It has such a promising premise, but after about fifty pages, I have stalled.

If you like Dickens and A Christmas Carol, you will find this very entertaining and clever. If you have any experience with losing your father or close relative, the "ghost" imagery in this novel will ring true. It starts slow, but I was terribly invested by the end. And sobbing--in a good way. I highly recommend.

This was an interesting little book. Stylistically, Bayard does an excellent job of mimicking Dickens. He tells the story of Tiny Tim--all grown up--and his obsessive quest to protect the orphan Philomenia. Tim's motives are never fully explained, which made it difficult for me to fully engage in the story. The plot is perhaps a bit darker than something Dickens would have chosen; however, Bayard lightens the mood a bit with characters such as Gully and Colin. If you're a fan of Dickens, I'd recommend this book; if not, there's probably not much for you here.

This novel was entirely...unexpected. All I knew going in was that the central character was the grown-up Tiny Tim of A XMAS CAROL. I had no idea what the author was going to do with him. And the result was wonderful, a novel of suspense and very *living* characters who completely fleshed out the story. Tim's "Uncle N" is Ebenezer Scrooge, who provides a paterfamilias for the story, while Tim has the opportunity to become a true man in the progress of the story, uncovering a child prostitution ring full of horror and then rescuing the children from orphan-status. The author is possessed of incredible vocabulary and the descriptions of 1860s London were SO vivid. As I said, I did not know what to expect, and I ended up being entirely drawn in. VERY creative and intelligent novel.

This was a bit gruesome for my tastes but I did enjoy it. It was fun to imagine Tiny Tim grown. Also interesting to read about the baggage that the author saddled him with, which was certainly plausible. I look forward to reading his next one about Poe.

All this book did was make me want to re-read "A Christmas Carol," and put THAT image of Tim Cratchit back in my head.
This is not a terrible book, but not a great one. Quickly read. One character, Philomela, was so promising. . .
The most telling review I can give is that if you feel compelled to read it, borrow a copy from the library or a friend. It isn't worth spending your own money on.

Ever wonder what happened to Tiny Tim after "A Christmas Carol"? Here it is-the story of Tim as a young man, living above a brothel and still financially tied to Scrooge. It's different than I expected, but still a fun, fun book to read. A little mystery, a little Christmas, and a favorite character all grown up-all in all, a good mix1

Another great Bayard historical fiction. Tiny Tim's life really picks up after the Christmas Carol.
