Bad news first: Still not what I expect of the author. After reading The Pleasure Trilogy, The Duchess Quartet, and the Essex Sisters...my expectations are high.
Good news: I actually enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the characters, really liked Simeon and Isidore - he is completely different from the what we would expect from a English Duke and she is a hot/quick tempered not a docile English lady. Their chemistry was believable and the way they discovered their feelings and needs was very entertaining. I could have done without some of the sub-plots like the water closet debaucle, and I couldn't stand the dowager Duchess.
It's looking promising for the next book of the series. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. (3.5/5)”
“Isadore was married at 12 by proxy and has never seen her husband, who spends his time traipzing about Africa. Now he's finally returned, and she's determined to have a real marriage at last, no matter what her husband is like. Simeon is determined to follow the Middle Way and not lose his control. Isadore decides to seduce him...
This is a well-written novel with interesting characters and quite a lot of originality. The heroine is determined to lose her virginity--but isn't much impressed when she does. The hero is a virgin (due to not wanting to contract syphilis), and thinks his intended wife is too forward. There is a lovely subplot about the hero's relationship with his dead father, and realizing his parents are just people--and not so wonderful people at that. There is a lot of humour in the novel, and as always it's nice to see intelligent characters spar with each other. Four stars. ”
“By far the best so far in the Duchess series. I enjoyed the less chess talk. Can't believe I want to find out what happens to Jemma. Sometimes the series was a bit tedious with all the chess talk.”

Stringing all these plot fillers together is the friendship amongst the four intelligent titled women, and the heartbreaks and emotional battles they go through before finding true happiness.”
