Yes | No“I've always like Le Carre and there's no doubt his talents have held up, although his more recent books take some getting used it. This book is drawn from today's headlines and you head toward the conclusion with several possibilities in mind, none of which turn out to be the actual ending. I guess that's because I'm from the USA. The plot doesn't so much meander as it does take a long time. Then the last 20 pages are sprung on you and leave you both rueful and satisfied. ”

The setting is Hamburg Germany with 3 nations, Germany, England and the US, trying to apprehend a suspected terror suspect Issa,,a tortured Chechen and Islamic terrorist, recently escaped from a Russian prison and smuggled into Hamburg. The plot is complex with the reader wondering who is innocent and guilty. The ending was a shocker and a bit of a letdown, but very probable. This was an excellent spy novel, which I enjoyed reading. ”

The book consisted primarily of interrogations of one sort or another - a lot of questions and explanations. Clearly a highly intelligent author. Sometimes I felt myself not caring much about the identity of Issa (who is Issa? That is the question of the plot of the novel.)
But I enjoyed the various behind the scenes views of the "War on Terror" (decidedly a different view from what we generally see in the US) and money laundering.
I "read" the audiobook version - a well read presentation.”
