I've read a few McPhee books... this is true to form. It's him describing riding along with a trucker, a railroad crew, a barge crew, and a canoe trip (which is a little out of place).

He is basically exploring the lives of these people and the system they are a part of. If you're curious about these things, it's a good experience, although it seemed a bit dull at times.
