West was such a skilled writer that one wishes she had written more than two novels, but oh, what novels they were. This novel captures the class and identity issues of a particular group of people on Martha's Vineyard. Many of these issues still play out today - the ins, the outs, the wanna-bes. She lives on the Vineyard for decades until her death and had the pedigree although her brown-skin color would have caused issues for her as shown through her novels.
