Overview: Groups

New York State of Mind 174 books / 71 members / 135 posts A group for books set in New York (city or state), written by New Yorkers, or books that capture the essence of this geographic and cultural area. Fiction, Non-fiction or short stories. The possibilities are endless...
Hip Hop Literature 60 books / 31 members / 22 posts This is a group for people who like to read and write about hip hop culture.

When it comes to fiction, this means anything from the Black Artemis novels to Adam Mansbach's ANGRY BLACK WHITE BOY. It can mean a street lit if the storyline involves hip hop. Or perhaps we can discuss why novels about hustlers and dealers are often called "hip hop fiction."

This is also a place to discuss nonfiction books about celebrity personalities and scholarly work by thinkers from Michael Eric Dyson, Mark Anthony Neal, Bakari Kitwana, Todd Boyd, Joan Morgan, Gwendolyn Pough, Jeff Chang and more. in fact, my hope is that we're more likely to discuss books like HOMEGIRLZ MAKE SOME NOISE and WHEN CHICKENHEADS COME HOME TO ROOST than we are anything written by Karrine Steffans or Carmen Bryant (although I'm not going to exclude that.)

Basically, this is a group for authors and readers who love to learn and dialogue about pop culture from a political perspective, especially that complex and contradictory phenomenon called hip hop.

Welcome!
Pop-Culture Junkies 460 books / 121 members / 683 posts Pop-culture junkie bibliophiles of the world unite. This group is for those of us who are proud to let the fangirl/fanboy flag fly and happily admit to our pop-culture junkie status. If you own enough movies to open up your own rental store, have more books than you do shelves, have ventured into a comic store more than once in your life, find yourself quoting a book, movie, or television show at least once daily, and thank the tv gods that DVR/Tivo was ever invented...then this is the group for you. We'll discuss the latest in pop culture media and have a good time. The group promises to be a chock full of hoot and a lil bit of nany. Possibly even legend...wait for it...ary.
