The Blade Itself (Gollancz SF)

by Joe Abercrombie

Inquisitor Glokta, a crippled and increasingly bitter relic of the last war, former fencing champion turned torturer extraordinaire, is trapped in a twisted and broken body - not that he allows it to distract him from his daily routine of torturing smugglers. Do not approach this book thinking of Tolkien, Martin, or anyone else, for that matter. This is not a slow, political thriller, a replacement mythology, or a cheap D&D fangasm. This is fantasy as I like it--violent, vulgar, gritty, and fun. It is the Pulp Fiction of fantasy, in all its grimy glory.

First volume in a fantasy trilogy, but I've already ordered the next two. Very good. Reminds me a bit of the Engineer trilogy: follows multiple characters, and has a similar level of sadism sometimes.

Doesn't have quite the depth of realism, though it's more fun in some ways. Some of the elements are a bit generic, but they're well handled. The characters are reassuring unsympathetic: the three main viewpoints are a torturer and a vain aristocrat; as well as the rather more likeable barbarian.

Has an actual plot, though it looks like they'll be heading off on a quest in the next one. Plenty of action. Worth reading

Not predictable and very entertaining. Lots of blood, mud, swords, and some sorcery. Interesting characters. Good read.

The start of a great fantasy series. Abercrombie has some brilliant characters, some you either love or hate, although there is one character that I can't quite decide upon! It's a fast moving story, the world building is great with some wonderful inventive races of peoples. I love the feel of the cover - almost like parchment, singed at the edges. The author is also a member on my favourite fantasy site.

This is the story of Logen Ninefinger a warrior of the north, Inquisitor Sand dan Glokty a former brilliant young swordsman now a torturer, Captain Jezal dan Luthar a vain and self-obsessed nobleman, Bayaz the first of the Magi, Bethod King of the Northmen, Collum West, an armyofficer, Ardee West his sister, Ferro Maljinn and some more...
To give a proper synopsis of this book is difficult, many characters are introduced in this first installment of the "First Law"-Series and if I really think about it – not much essential happens it´s more a setting for the story to come. But it isn´t boring at all – on the contrary! I´ve read the book in a very short time because I wanted to learn more about the interesting main characters who are real "anti-heroes" only brought together by Bayaz the Magi to save the world. The characters are well-drawn never only good or bad, the plot is interesting, the writing style is humorous and you get insight into the characters and their train of thoughts. Nearly every protagonist has his fav. saying, I liked Logen´s "You have to be realistic about these things" best.
All in all I can highly recommend this book if you´re interested to read an exceptional fantasy book!
Next books in the series: "Before they are hanged" and "Last Argument of Kings"

This book was quite good. Especially in light of the fact that this is Joe Abercrombie's first published work. Great characters, lots going on, GREAT fight scenes. The only problem I really had with the book was the fact that it didn't end. Right when the climax should have come, the book opened up into the ether. In this sense, the book is really similar to The Fellowship of the Ring: Story and lead-up to the end of the book, extended fight scene, and then everything just ends. Seems to me that this book and the two remaining in the trilogy should really have just been one book. They're definitely one story. This first book definitely made me want to read the other two though. If you love fantasy, pick this one up. It's one of the good ones.
