“I found myself profoundly disappointed by this book, both in its written content and the quality of the visual works contained within. Although a detailed reading of its synopsis does reveal what the book actually is, I felt as though a book with this title should have amounted to far more.
I picked this up hoping for some insightful essays on how architecture is used within virtual worlds like "Second Life". I found only one essay to have any particular relevance to that, and although its comparisons between the Grid and shopping malls was quite thought-provoking, the rest of the book felt like a ramble. I was also thoroughly disappointed to find that most of the authors were 'plugging' further material in amongst their quite broad and sometimes irrelevant writing. For a book which commemorates a contest, this is perhaps appropriate, but again a subtitle like "How the Virtual Changes Physical Architecture" made me feel like I'd been lied to. I was sorry to be feeling down about a book written for this unique field, but there is no mention of a link to physical architecture in here. That said, roll on the day when we DO see a good book about "Second Life" design.”
