Characters edit
- Bianca Olivier: The protagonist and main character. She is destined to become a vampire but sometimes doesn't like the thought of it. She has always known what she will become all her life and is of a minority of Vampires that are born not made. She is haunted by ghosts in this book after discovering her parents needed help from them to have her. She runs away with Lucas for a second time in this book.
- Lucas Ross: He is a member of Black cross but is in love with Bianca. He leaves with Bianca at the end and goes back to Black cross. He helps Balthazar track down his sister showing he can be good. He only joined Black cross because he had to and he reveals his Father was killed by vampires.
- Balthazar More: He is a vampire attendee of the school but not like others and does not act to harm and bully the human attendees like many other vampire students. He is friendly to everyone and is the best looking student according to Bianca. He likes her and wants to be with her but this may be because she reminds him of someone called Jane according to Charity.
- Raquel: A human student attending the school but unlike others got in on a scholarship. She reveals that her house is haunted and that she was scared while there and even raped by him. She doesn't trust others easily and doesn't enjoy contact. She makes friends with Dana very fast and even though she doesn't let on she likes to spend time with Bianca. She runs off with Bianca and Lucas to become part of Black cross.
- Vic: Bianca's friend and a room mate to Ranulf. He became friends with Bianca after she and Lucas dated in the previous year. He is smarter than he shows and knows more about any subject than any one else according to Bianca. He was chosen by Mrs Bethany to room with a vampire because he would shake every thing off and accept the person no matter of their strangeness.
- Ranulf: He is Vic's room mate and a vampire. He is one of the nicer vampires in Evernight especially to Vic who he plays chess with. He doesn't under stand technology.
- Mrs. Bethany: The head mistress of the school she is brutal and nasty. She doesn't like change especially to the school rules and is very proud of her school which is also her home and life. She doesn't regularly leave the school and she is a brutal killer when needed shown when she kills several Black cross members.
- Dana: A member of Black cross and a friend to Lucas . She seems to nice to be Black Cross. She is friendly to Raquel especially when she becomes part of Black cross.
- Courtney: Bianca calls her the typical Evernight type who hurts and is vindictive to other students. She tries to put other students down especially Bianca as she can't understand why Balthazar shows her affection. She sneaks out of Evernight to Amherst and when she spots Lucas with Bianca and Balthazar threatens to tell Mrs Bethany. She is decapitated by Charity.
- Eduardo: Lucas's step father and a leader of Black cross. He is not accepted by Lucas. He doesn't like Bianca and doesn't believe in Lucas to do what he wants.
- Kate: Lucas's mother and part of Black Cross.
- Mr. Yee: A technology teacher who teaches vampires about modern life devices. He also teaches Bianca and other students drivers Education.
- Mr. Watanabe: Part of Black Cross and one the oldest members. He dies in the fight caused by Charity. He tells Bianca and Lucas to "enjoy each other"
- Erich: an evil vampire who not only is hateful but also stalks Raquel and plans to kill her.
- Adrian Olivier: Bianca's Father. He is protective of Bianca but along with Celia shows a lot of affection to Balthazar wanting Bianca to spend more time with him and to learn more about becoming a vampire.
- Celia Olivier: Bianca's mother. Tells her shes her miracle baby and gives her a very sheltered live. She doesn't tell her she needed help to have her.
- Charity: Balthazar's sister who has now become a brutal killer and part of a tribe. She wants to cause pain to others and towards the end causes a fight between Black Cross and Evernight's vampires.

“"I'm not dating Balthazar. I'm pretend dating him. Which involves some not pretend hand-holding. And maybe some not pretend kissing. But it's all actually pretend, see? I groaned. My explanations were making my head hurt already."”

“"You gotta learn how to take a compliment, because I'm not going to stop making them."”
Balthazar -
“"The worst was relizing that I’d lost him for nothing because he’d been rght about all of it-- vampires, my parents, everything. He’d told me my parents lied. I yelled at him for it. He forgave me. He told me vampires were killers. I told him they weren’t, even after one stalked Raquel. He told me Charity was dangerous. I didn’t listen, and she killed Courtney. He told me vampires were treacherous, and did I get the message? Not until my illusions had been destroyed by my parents’ confession."”

“"That guy is totally cracked out," Vic said one day, as we walked past Balthazar in the great hall. I don't think he's on anything." I didn't mean, for real. If he was cracked out for real, he'd probably be having more fun, right?" Vic shrugged. "Balty looks like he's not having any fun. He looks like he never had any. Like he wouldn't know fun if it started dancing around yelling 'I'm fun' in his face."”

“"I always kinda liked our attic ghost. When I was a kid, I used to go up there and read stories to it. Show it my new toys. It's just an old spirit stuck between the worlds, right? What's to be scared of?""”

“"There's one way. Only one. Mine." Balthazar stepped closer, using every inch he had on Lucas, who was tall but not that tall. "Charity is a person. The same as you, the same as me." "You and me aren't the same." Balthazar cocked his head. "Then let's say the same as Bianca. Will that make you listen?" "Bianca's no killer! She didn't have a choice about what she is." "Guys, don't do this," I pleaded, but they paid no attention. "A choice? You think we all get a choice?" Although Balthazar spoke softly, there was a roughness to his voice I'd never heard before. It sent chills down my spine. "Try being hunted down in the night. Try running as far and as fast as you can and finding out their faster. Try coming to in a stable, with your parents' dead bodies on the ground in front of you, your hands roped above your head and a dozen hungry vampires arguing with each other about who gets you next. See how much choice you have then." Lucas just stared at him. Obviously he'd never imagined anything like that; neither had I. Even more quietly, Balthazar continued, "Try watching your baby sister die, and then tell me that you wouldn't spend the rest of eternity trying to make up for it. When you've done all that, Lucas, then you can talk to me about choices. Until that time, tell me what I need to know and then shut your mouth."”

“"The first rule of Evernight is that any vampire who seeks sanctuary must be given a place."”

“"I didn’t tell him. He found out. Basically, he caught me coming in after the last time you and I saw each other. But he won’t give us away, Lucas. He’s even willing to help us see each other, as long as we help him with Charity.” “What, like, a fund-raiser or something?” I’d forgotten he didn’t know her name. “The vampire girl in Amherst.” “Wait—Charity? That’s her name? You were able to figure out who she is.” He smiled so proudly that all the tension of the moment instantly melted. “I fell in love with a genius."”
