It's very difficult to review a book of the size and scope of "2666". Other critics and reviewers have done a better job than I can offer so I won't let this become too long. I expect that most of the negative reviews will complain that the novel is too complex or leaves plotlines unresolved. ...

I only lasted a few pages. I can't imagine why Stephen King recommended it. This book is so stupid.

Brilliant book, but not easy to read. The very long section on the Juarez killings bogs down. But worth sticking with it for the pyrotechnics of the far-spinning Bolano riffs.

I don't get the fuss over this book. I gave up after 400 pages and it was a struggle to get that far.

Copious words. I'm not sure all of them are necessary. I'm trying to keep my focus and keep forging on.

If you have not had the chance to read Latin literature – you are in for a real treat – I always feel that Latinos write with a twinkle in their eye and that somehow a sense of mischievousness makes its way into the words, into the story. So while we read of a horrible tragedy and great unsolved mystery of murdered women in a Mexican border town – there’s just a teensiest bit if mirth tucked in there - like comic relief during a horror movie.
Even with moments of levity, 2666 is deep reading...something that requires small breaks - you cannot read this in long stretches! The depth of the characters and the methodical approach to creating the ambiance is masterful and much appreciated. Bolaño reminds me a lot of Fyodor Dostoevsky in the process of telling the story. Side stories and small digressions come together to build a powerful foundation for the plot to sit on. An author who takes his time.

Incredibly loose organization but it does weave together in the end.
