Good fictional work on the life of the real Miyamoto Musashi, the ronin who later developed the art of fighting with two swords. Musashi is most famous for his treatise on strategy entitled The Book of Five Rings.

The book doesn't cover his entire life but does give background accounts as well as his life as a ronin (masterless samurai).

A lot of the time I had no idea what was going on but when it pertained to Musashi I always knew what was going on. There was so much other stuff and people it was really hard to follow but actually...it didn't matter! It was all superfluous to the life of Musashi.

I enjoyed this book, albeit it was almost 1000 pages.

I am glad he got his victory in the end and got the girl Otsu finally by the end of the book. Jesus freaking Christ someone should have put that witch Osugi out of the readers misery [God what a nagging simple minded hag she was...glad she turned into a human being by the end of the book....Was I the only person who was absolutely sick of her quest????] haha....anyway...

A fun read actually. Not sure how much is true and how much is total fiction, but there are words of wisdom along the way.

Written in the 30s, the story is about the saga of the greatest Japanese samurai namely Miyamoto Musashi, a man who try to find his identity through 'the way of the sword', his obsessions, efforts, and sacrifices to achieve mastery in swordsmanship. It is later in his journey that he finds that a true samurai is not all about mastering techniques to cut one's head, but more importantly it's about spirit, persistence, attitude, and consistency. He thinks that a good samurai must also possess mastery in other aspects of life, such as in governance, war strategy, and arts.

In my opinion, Musashi is a must read book for everyone. So many lessons we could take from the story. It is about integrity, persistence, discipline, and idealism; values should exist inside everyone's mind and heart.

My complete review about the book can be read at http://www.slepi.net/entry/musashi_by_eiji_yoshikawa
