It is offensive (at times) both in language and subject matter, revealing the author's depth of research and preparation for this novel. |

I hated the dialogue between the men ("Wuz up, man?"); the women were all way too mean and one dimensional; I had no empathy or sympathy for Charlotte at all.
The character of the University was completely wanting. A University is a much more interesting and dynamic place that Mr. Wolfe remembers. There are a myriad of personalities, professors, persons, clubs, organizations, etc. that he left out of this story. ”
“Another enlightening book, written in the usual Wolfe style that I like.”

The portrayal of schools with basketball programs as drunken bacchanals is fairly accurate, based on my experience, but these characters are whiny and annoying and horrible. The story would have been a lot better if there'd been at least one /normal/ character.”

The setting is Dupont University and is told from the perspective of a girl from Sparta, NC, who struggles with her background and morals in this new scene of wealthy college kids and frat parties. Also a second perspective of a young man on the Dupont Basketball Team. I was initially interested because of Charlotte's character based from Sparta, which was only 30 mins from my home in Wilkesboro. Also felt she reminded me of some girls I went to school with, naive and innocent outside their comforts of home. The ending was a bit abrupt and needed more elaboration in my opionion. Tom Wolfe is a very wordy writer, but worth the time if you have it. ”
