What a great book. The best I have read from 2008. O'Neill is a master storyteller, a beautiful conveyer of human consciousness and a wonderful wordsmith. He paints a beautiful portrait of the "other side" of new york city that is rarely illuminated so elegantly. i love the various local references -- to the parakeets (we like to visit them in whitestone, queens), the various restaurants, the cemetaries, the cricket fields -- the business dealings of chuck, chucks world views... (i can go on and on about chuck -- what a fascinating character) and Jans' interactions with the diverse group of people he meets along his journey in New York. There is a realness to this book that is often lacking from authors with O'Neill apparent talent. I highly recommend this book to people who like good books.
