  • Mirasol: Formerly a beekeeper with a small woodright in the demesne called Willowlands, she has recently been chosen to be the new Chalice.
  • The Master (Liapnir/Azungbai): The younger brother of the last Master who died unexpectedly without heir, he was sent away from Willowlands seven years ago to become a Priest of Fire -- a role no one has ever come back from before.
  • The Grand Seneschal (Nicandimon): Third in the Circle of Willowlands; he is responsible for calling the Master back from the Fire and finding Mirasol to be Chalice.
  • Deager: The Overlord's agent to the Willowlands.
  • Horuld: An outblood man chosen to be the Master's heir by the Overlord.
  • Clearseer: Youngest and lowest member of the Circle of the Willowlands.
  • Selim: One of Mirasol's friends before she became Chalice
