I've read more about the man than I have by the man, so I thought reading one of his earliest works would be a good place to start. I really liked this book. ...” see full review » see other reviews » |

I have to admit I read it years ago when I heard Johnny Depp was making it into a movie. That got sidetracked. Dont know if it will ever be in the theatres. A different take on life in the tropics. I felt hungover, hot and thirsty while reading it!”

Written by Thompson in the years before his drug use and personality surpassed his writing ability, this book is more relatable than Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The story is loosely based on Thompson's time spent in Puerto Rico as a twenty-something journalist. His time there is spent carousing with a bunch of like-minded alcoholic writers. My one complaint is that there is too much of Hunter in all of the characters. Throughout the book Paul Kemp, Hunter's character, is constantly thrown into outlandish, alcohol-induced situations. They inevitably result in the reader laughing out loud and shaking his head in disapproving joy.”

I don't even mind the fact that he intentionally gave all the characters (Yeamon, Chenault, etc.) names that were hard to sound out in your head while reading. The funniest thing is Ahearn and I both read it, and he hated it for all the reasons I loved it! ”
