This is one of the very few books that I've read more that once. I am always take by Thompson's pre-Gonzo prose. It is just a gripping, just as over the top, and just a brilliant, but just restrained enough to make this a much smoother, and less jarring novel.

You read Fear and Loathing to crush your mind, you read The Rum Diary to sooth it. At least I do, which probably makes a odd person, but that is the honest truth.
