I saw this on a "Manly books to read" list. I think it is an excellent representation of being "manly". Roosevelt talks about people who just have "the desire to lead men into danger".
There are about 10 descriptions of soldiers who have multiple bullet wounds who continue fighting and who wouldn't go to get treatment until the fighting was done.
The most interesting takeaways were how dedicated Roosevelt was to the cause. And how strategic he was to make sure it would be achieved. (he turned down a high ranking position so that training would get underway more quickly).
And it was interesting to see what type of people were recruited to be volunteers in the Rough Riders. The most accomplished athletes at Harvard and Yale to the wild cowboys who lived out west.
