Years ago, the districts revolted against the Capitol, but the Capitol won and destroyed District 13. As punishment for this failed rebellion, every year one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district are selected at random and forced to participate in the Hunger Games. The "Games" are a televised event in which the participants, or "tributes", must fight to the death in a dangerous outdoor arena until only one remains. The story follows 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District 12 who volunteers for the 74th Games in place of her younger sister, Primrose. Also participating from District 12 is Peeta Mellark, a boy whom Katniss knows from school and who once gave her bread when her family was starving.

Katniss and Peeta are taken to the Capitol, where they meet the other tributes and are publicly displayed to the Capitol audience. During this time, Peeta reveals on-air his long-time unrequited love for Katniss. Katniss believes this to be a ploy to gain audience sponsorship for the Games, which can be crucial for survival, as audience members are permitted to send gifts to favored tributes during the Games. The Games begin with eleven of the 24 tributes dying in the first day during the bloodbath while Katniss and Peeta remain alive but separated.

Supposedly due to Katniss and Peeta's beloved image in the minds of the audience as "star-crossed lovers", a rule change is announced midway through the games, stating that two tributes from the same district can win the Hunger Games as a pair. Upon hearing this, Katniss searches for Peeta and finds him wounded. She nurses him back to health and acts the part of a young girl falling in love to gain more favor with the audience and, consequently, gifts from her sponsors. When the couple are finally the last two tributes, the Gamemakers suddenly reverse the rule change and try to force them into a dramatic finale where one must kill the other to win. Instead, they both threaten suicide by means of poisonous berries in the hope that the Gamemakers would prefer two winners to none. The ploy works, and both Katniss and Peeta are declared winners of the 74th Hunger Games.

Though she survives the arena and is treated to a hero's welcome in the Capitol, Katniss is warned that she has now become a political target by defying the authoritarian leaders so publicly. Afterwards, Peeta is heartbroken to learn that their relationship was at least partially a calculated ploy to garner sympathy from the audience, although Katniss remains unsure of her own feelings.

Katniss Everdeen: 16-year-old girl from the Seam in the 12th District of Panem who struggles in many different ways throughout the book.
Peeta Mellark: The male tribute from District 12
Primrose Everdeen: The younger sister of Katniss Everdeen. The only person who Katniss cares for. Nicknamed "Prim." Katniss volunteers for her at the Reaping.
Haymitch Abernathy: Previous and only winner of the Hunger Games, comes from district 12. Drunk for a large amount of the book. He is seen as the District's drunk but Katniss comes to find he is more than that. He has his smarts and is a lot like Katniss in many ways, and eventually controls his drinking to aid Katniss and Peeta in the Games. Because he is the only other winner of the Hunger Games from District 12 he becomes their mentor for the games.
Gale Hawthorne: A close friend of Katniss who hunts with her. They watch each others backs and are sworn to keep each others families fed if one is summoned into the Hunger Games.
Cato: Cato is a strong, burly teenage boy who is drawn for the Hunger Games. Cato is a male tribute from district two and is the leader of the Career Pack in the games.
Effie Trinket: The escort for District 12, pink-haired Effie has been completely co-opted by the system, forcing a painfully false cheer as she exhorts her tributes to rise happily to each "big, big, big day!" She aspires to a more prestigious district than 12 and is unapologetically self-serving. However, she gradually grows to care for Katniss and Peeta eventually.
Mrs. Everdeen: Katniss's mother. She practices holistic healing. She relies on our heroine for their supplies since her husband died in a mining accident. She suffered a catatonic depression for a few months after her husband's death. She runs an apothecary shop in District 12.
Cinna: He is a stylist at the Games. These are his first Games as a stylist. He is the only Capitol person Katniss feels comfortable around talking to and just being with. He designs the outfit that make her "The girl on fire" and helps her become loved by the Capitol. Cinna knows how to bring out the real Katniss so that she's not on the defense. Wears gold eyeliner.
Delly Cartwright: Peeta and Katniss' acquaintance from school. Her name is mentioned by Peeta as a diversion when Katniss mentions that she recognizes a red-headed female Avox and is scolded severely. Described as blond and heavy.
Caesar Flickerman: The interviewer before and after the Games begin. Very good at making the interviews easier for the tributes and victor. Has blue hair and wears a blue suit.
Mr. Mellark: Baker of District 12 and a friend of our hero's father. He is Peeta's dad & the kinder - more compassionate of Peeta's parents. Peeta tells a story that expresses how Mr. Mellark once wanted to marry Katniss' mother and lost to a singing miner. He gives Katniss cookies before she leaves District 12.
Claudius Templesmith: Announcer for the Hunger Games. Has been the announcer for over fifty years.
Madge Undersee: The daughter of the mayor of District 12 and one of Katniss' friends. Gives Katniss a pin in the shape of a Mockingjay to wear as her token from District 12.
Mr. Everdeen: Katniss and Prim's father. He died in a mining accident years ago, but left great memories to Katniss and taught her a lot about hunting. He also had an amazing singing voice. The birds would stop singing just to hear him sing.
Darius: District 12's Head Peacekeeper that buys game from Katniss and Gale.
Flavius: Member of the Hunger Games prep team that works with Katniss. He, and the rest of her prep team, are very flamboyant. Has red corkscrew curls and wears purple lipstick.
Rue: Rue is the smallest tribute, a 12-year-old girl from the orchard district, District 11. She appears immensely vulnerable and awakens sympathy in the Game's captive audience. She loves music and her love of music inspires her to teach Katniss the simple four note melody that she used to signal quitting time in the orchards back home. Katniss and Rue use this melody as a signal call to each other to let them know they're both safe, since the Mockingjays repeat the tune when they hear it. Rue also brings attention to Katniss's mockingjay pin— the pin is what led Rue to trust Katniss, because of the mockingjay's symbolic significance as a protest against the Capitol. She reminds Katniss of Prim, and receives a seven as a training score prior to the games based on her ability to hide in the trees. She and Katniss align in the arena. Rue is killed by Marvel, who in turn is killed by Katniss. Katniss sings to her as she dies and then buries her in flowers.
Glimmer: Female District 1 tribute. Killed by tracker jackers.
Mayor Undersee: The mayor of District 12 and Madge Undersee's father. He buys strawberries from Katniss and Gale.
Clove: Female Tribute from District 2. Cato's partner and a skilled knife-thrower. Killed by Thresh after she herself attempts to kill Katniss.
Marvel: The male tribute from District 1.
Johanna Mason: Previous victor from District 7. Offish and hard to get to know, but is fiercely loyal. She wins her games by pretending to be small and weak, and then shows off her fighting skills.
Thresh: District 11 male tribute.
Foxface: Female tribute from District 5. She is extremely clever, stealthy, and quick. She earns her name "Foxface" because she reminds Katniss of a fox. She has fiery red hair and rarely uses a weapon.
President Coriolanus Snow: The cold-hearted president of Panem that is very upset with the outcome of the Games. Because of this, he plans his revenge against our heroine and her family. Smells of blood and roses.
Atala: The Lady who talks to the tributes before they start Training. Described as athletic.
Red-headed Avox Girl: Serves Katniss, Peeta, Effie and Haymitch during training. Katniss recognizes her as the girl she failed to save in the woods.
Greasy Sae: Owner of the Hob who often trades with Katniss and Gale. Makes various soups.
Portia: Peeta's stylist for the games. Cinna's partner.
Octavia: Octavia, on of Katniss' design team, has a green toned skin and is a little on the heavier side of weight. She takes a great role in the conversations with the rest of Katniss' design crew.

The story takes place in what used to be North America, a post-apocalyptic nation called Panem, some time in the future.

District 1: A favored district of the Capitol. Produces luxury items for the Capitol and trains Careers tributes to win the Hunger Games. Home district to the tributes Glimmer and Marvel. Specializes in diamond and luxury.
District 2: A favored district of the Capitol. Trains Careers tributes to win the Hunger Games. Home district to the tributes Cato and Clove. This district specializes in weapons.
District 3: The factory district that produces technology and machinery. Home district to two unnamed tributes.
District 4: The fishing district. Home district to two unnamed tributes.
District 5: District 5's industry is power. Home district to the tribute nicknamed Foxface and an unnamed male. They power the cameras they use in the Capitol.
District 6: District 6's industry is transportation. Home district to two unnamed tributes.
District 7: Produces lumber and paper products. Home district to two unnamed tributes.

Capitol: The main city, which governs the 12 Districts. Preparations for the Hunger Games take place here.
Cornucopia: A large cornucopia stocked with valuable items at the start of the games. The tributes begin the Hunger Games just outside of the cornucopia, and must immediately decide what to fight over, or whether to flee.
The Hob: District 12's black market, where the townspeople can get goods that the Capitol doesn't provide.
The Arena: Where the 24 tributes battle to the death. It is created by the Gamemakers and a different setting is used for each game. They are kept open after the Games for the rich citizens to visit.
The Cave: An area in the arena, located near a stream.
The Seam: The part of District 12 where Katniss and her family live, the poorer (in terms of money) part of the District.
Meadow: The scruffy field in District 12.
Justice Building in District 12: The place where the tributes say their farewell to their relatives.
Training Center: A tower designed exclusively for the tributes and their teams prior to the Hunger Games, located somewhere in the Capitol.
The Meadow: The place before the fence, where citizens of the Seam are allowed to go.

Career Tributes: Tributes of wealthy districts who often band together early on during the Hunger Games; they are trained to be warriors.
Peacekeepers: The members of the Capitol's police force, who are stationed in every district.
Prep Team: The team that prepares Katniss' hair and make-up and body and makes her look pretty for all of her interviews with Caesar Flickerman.
Gamemakers: The organizers of the Hunger Games.
Stylists: That make the outfits and pretty up the Tributes before slaughter
Avox: A group of people disgraced for treason or rebellion, becoming the lowest class and servants of everyone in society.

Career Tributes: Also called "Careers". They are children who have been specially trained for years for the Hunger Games, despite this being against the rules. Most "Careers" are from Districts 1, 2, and 4.
Muttation (aka Mutt): A mutated creature bred by the Capitol. Orginally, most muttations were created for use again the Districts in the uprising, and they are now used in the Games.
Jabberjay: A male bird muttation with the ability to mimic human speech and accurately repeat extensive conversations. They were bred to spy on rebels during the uprising.
Mockingjay: A hybrid species, produced by the interbreeding of jabberjays with native mockingbirds. They have the ability to mimic but not reproduce the human voice. They can learn human songs and repeat them.
Avox: A person who has has his or her tongue cut out as punishment for a serious crime. They are then turned into mute servants in the Capitol for the rest of their lives.
Tessera: (Plural: tesserae) A year's meager supply of grain and oil for one person. Tesserae can be obtained in exchange for adding one's name to the Hunger Games drawing additional times.
The Hob: The black market of District 12.
Tracker Jacker: A mutated wasp whose sting brings hallucinations and, in many cases, painful death. Once you disturb their nest, they will track you until you're dead.
Hi-jacked: When you have been tortured into submission, creating fear, and resulting in brainwashing, by the Capitol.
Tributes: The children who compete in the Hunger Games.
Groosling: A wild bird found in the arena. Easily hunted for food.

Death and loss: Katniss has lost several people in her life, including her father to a mining accident and her mother (temporarily) to a severe depression.
Justice: The people of the Capitol are given privileges and commodities that are not available to the rest of Panem.
"Haves" vs. "have nots": There is the theme of the elite few who have the largest percentage of wealth, and the masses who are living and starving without the bare necessities. The people from the Capitol and its favored Districts are the "haves", and the other citizens are the "have nots".
Autocratic government: The districts are forced to follow the Capitol's rules. Any sign of defiance and disobedience from any individual or group is given a corresponding punishment from the authorities.
Survival: Katniss and the other tributes count on much-needed survival skills in the Hunger Games arena in a bid to emerge as the sole winner.
Post-apocalypse: The story takes place in the country of Panem, which was built after the apocalypse.
Mockingjay: Throughout the book, the mockingjays represent defiance against and mockery of the Capitol, primarily due to the species' emergence and thriving despite the fact that this was not the Capitol's intention.
Bread: When Peeta gave a loaf of burned bread to Katniss, he showed that he cared for her and her family. It is a gesture of kindness for which Katniss feels she can never properly thank or repay Peeta.
Owing a debt: Throughout the novel there is the idea of having to repay someone you are indebted to, such as Katniss feeling she owes Peeta, and Thresh feeling he owes Katniss for her kindness to Rue.
Sacrifice: Many characters in this novel choose to sacrifice precious things.

Young Adults age 13 and up. It does contain disturbing themes and some violence. There is a little romance in it that may not be suitable for some children. Highly recommended for reluctant readers. Very thought provoking. Also not recommended until the reader has learned not to glorify violence.
