I didn't know anything about this book when I picked it up. I was so thrilled with the letter format. I loved how well you can get to know a character who is completely absent from the book. I loved the twists in the love story, which isn't the main focus of the book but became mine! I completely enjoyed this book! Another one full of characters I will miss.

Engaging characters, slow but suspenseful plot, subtle irony, deep human wisdom.

I loved this book!! Just the right amount of humor to balance the tragedy of WWII occupation of the Channel Islands. Fascinating history, and cleverly written in the form of letters. I loved the characters, and the author did a good job of creating the 'feel' of the island.

I loved it and my love of writing letters has been rekindled. Glad to learn more about Guernsey.

Excellent read. Really enjoyed it. A bit sad in parts. didn't know Guernsey's history during the war. Life was pretty tough.

This book was a complete surprise to me...I had no inkling it was written in the form of a group of letters. I loved the post war climate, but most of all I love the main character's moxie.

This novel is written as a series of letters between, Juliet, the protagonist, and her various friends and acquaintances. The story is set during World War II and depicts the Germans' occupation of the Channel Islands. The islanders use books and their "literary society" as a way to cope with the war.

    Library book.
I enjoy stories of war-time England. I try to imagine the courage it took to live day-to-day life right in the shadow of the enemy. Imagine being bombed, or occupied by the Nazis. Scary stuff.
This book is set in the period immediately after the war, and told in epistolary fashion by a series of fascinating characters who seem as real as interviewees in a documentary. I can't tell which character is my favorite- or which one I like best.
It's deep and light-hearted at the same time.
