“Lovely book about the joys and benefits of reading and book groups. It actually gives a very vivid picture of the Nazi occupation of Guernsey Isle.”

The entire book is a collection of letters and telegrams, but told in a very lively manner. Note: I don't like or agree with every single thing in this book, but that can be said for most of the books I read.”

During the WWII Nazi occupation of Guernsey, one of the English channel islands, a group of locals and transplanted Londoners cast their lot together, ostensibly as members of a book club but eventually as dear friends who must protect and save one another. (Faced with limited food, they share Potato Peel Pie at their meetings.) As a reader, you're drawn in to their stories through the personal letters they exchanged, giving you a sense you're peeking at private details and events that unfold over time. Charming, lighthearted, sad, historical and, mostly, very enjoyable.”

Shortly after the end of World War II, a member of the G.L.P.P.P.S. contacts Juliet and a correspondence develops between them, which broadens to include members and non-members when Juliet decides to document war-time island happenings. Travelling to Guernsey to meet the Society members, Juliet takes up residence in the cottage of a former resident, transported and ultimately murdered by the Nazis. How she comes to remain resident on the island is something I shall not spoil the story by telling you. Read this, shed the odd tear, have one or two laughs. Not my usual reading fare at all, but I obviously enjoyed it, as I read it to the end of the Afterword. 8/10”

While the story and characters are delightful, the occupation was a brutal time of slavery and betrayal.”

I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. At first it seems as if it is going to be a sentimental novel about a number of quirky and loveable characters on Guernsey Island, just after WWII. But it actually has some very interesting bits of history about the German occupation of the island, and some parts that are not light hearted at all. It's a fast read, but quite good.”
