“The first three-fourths of this book were really fun to read, with the novel up until that point being a fun and fluffy, or at least as fluffy as a book with a bunch of murders can be, mystery. The boring guy surrounded by a bunch of amazing girls template that I've seen in a lot of light novels was present here, but it wasn't at all bothersome, since everyone seemed to be fairly well-characterized. Towards the end of this novel, however, things became a slog. The explanation of the crime and its motives takes so long and is so dense that it makes the last stretch of even the most convoluted Sherlock Holmes story seem short, straightforward, and to the point. It doesn't ruin the book, really, and I'd still like to read the second in the series if I get the chance, but I really wished it had been handled more efficiently.”

Yes | No“Written by Nisio Isin, a bestselling ‘light novel’ author in Japan, this first volume in the ‘Zaregoto’ series contains a most excellent locked-room murder mystery. The prose is smooth and breezy, and the plotting, ingenious. Our narrator, the apathetic and self-deprecating Ii-chan, finds himself on an isolated island and in the company of several eccentric, ‘moe-type’ girl geniuses. Together with his blue-haired companion, computer expert Kunagisa (an oddball herself), Ii-chan is drawn into solving a seemingly impossible murder. But the story will not simply end with the denouement. Why not? Read to find out!”
