The beauty of The Alchemist was that in Santiago we had a character to love and go on adventures with. Along the way we learned as the he learned. That is what made it such a powerful book.

The problem with Coelho's more recent works is that he seems to have sacrificed character...

Good! Nice story about Good and Evil, but the author didn`t explain what makes a human good or evil apart from control and choice.

It is not a great book. But is small in size so can be read in 4-5 hours. Before this book I have only read one of his book 'Alchemist'. May be I am expecting somewhat near it, but Alchemist is incomparable. It has a very simple story but as it is general for Coelho he tried to go deep in human emotions. Although it doesn't make any great impact on me. Question raised is really interesting if we see some of the people or in specific scenario. But is pointless if generalized.
In remote village of Viscos a stranger arrives with eleven gold bars. He propose to villagers through a girl named Miss Prym: if by the end of the week one person(it doesn't matter whether he is old/ill) from the village is found dead, he will give the gold bars to the villagers to do with as they may. But the man must be murdered.
Story builds mostly by the thoughts of this lady Miss Prym. His inner struggle with herself and stranger. Then it broadens to include all villagers when proposal was put by Miss Prym. It also tells about the stranger's motivation to corrupt the village.

A bit slow. Ok plot. Not on the same plane as Coelho's other works.
