Funny stories. I was hoping for more laugh out loud, but they were well written, sarcastic and bitter, just like I like them.

Sloane Crosley has been touted as this "fresh new voice" and compared to David Sedaris and Sarah Vowell. I found this book of autobiographical essays more than a little mean-spirited, and not at all funny or interesting.

These humorous, sarcastic essays chronicle the life of a 20-something woman in the Big City. The author tries to describe herself as a self-deprecating Loveable Loser-type, but instead comes across just this side of snarky. Her moments of self-clarity (especially as regarding the essay about her high school friend getting married) did not ring true to me. She's smart and knows it, but her stories read like they're told by a former Mean Girl all grown up.

Didn't even think it was funny. Maybe it's my age but I do have a good sense of humor.

I love Sloane Crosley - although admittedly am a little jealous too. She's a great writer with a great perspective.

Some reviewers have called Sloane Crosley "a lost Sedaris". I beg to differ. I kept hoping that she'd be as funny as either David or Amy Sedaris (heck, or even Gretchen from whom I have never heard/read a peep). What bothers me about Crosley's writing is that she comes across like someone who thinks she is in a class above her readers, and that she is laughing at us, not with us.
Trust me, you'll get more pleasure out of reading David Sedaris.

Crosley’s voice is wry and sardonic without coming across as grouchy or mean. Her situational observations are relatable, especially if you are a young woman of a certain age and a certain background (which I am). It was a little frightening how much I identified with some of the essays, but her gentle, self-deprecating humor passes the time. A couple of the essays went to far off on tangents, but otherwise Crosley is bearing the mantle of a modern, single, urban Erma Bombeck.

It's clever and right up my alley. It is full of short stories so I can read it over lunch and have a good laugh.

There's something validating about hearing your stray and odd thoughts echoed by authors who are thinking the same stray and odd thoughts. It's another thing entirely to hear your own voice in someone else's book. My little brother gave me this book for my birthday saying, "It reminded me of you." After reading it, I can see why. Except for the expletives and drug references, Crosley writes the way I speak. Her autobiographical essays while not my experiences were ones I might have had in another life. I completely got her sarcasim and slightly dark sense of humor. Some essays are better than others, but then some days are better than others. I will be selective of whom I will recommend this book to, but it will definitely get passed along to my equally quirky friends.
