This latest Pratchett is a delightful read. It all happens in a parallel universe, a place very similar to Earth but just a tiny bit different. The boy Mau has been sent to The Small Island to show he is ready to become a man. On returning from the island, he is no longer a boy - but he is not...

Mau is away from his small island when a giant wave destroys his village, leaving him alone - and unable to complete the ceremony that would have given him his man's soul. It takes all his strength just to carry on, with the voices of his ancestors haunting him.

Daphne finds herself the lone survivor when the ship she was traveling on crashes into Mau's island on the same wave. With little to guide her but her grandmother's training for high society, she isn't sure whether to approach Mau as a potential friend or foe.

As other survivors gather on the island, Mau and Daphne form a bond and work to create a society that's all their own. Mau begins to believe in himself despite his fear that he lacks a soul. Daphne realizes there are far more important things than propriety.

But when all they've gained is threatened by an outside enemy, will their makeshift community be able to hold steady?

NATION has everything you could ask for in a novel. Its dramatic scenes are both poignant and moving, with Pratchettt's customary humor keeping the proceedings from straying into melodrama. Both main characters are distinctive, and it's a pleasure watching them come into their own throughout the story. The villains are suitably creepy and brutal. Little details of the setting and cultures make it all feel so real.

Highly recommended to both teens and adults.

A slow start nearly made me put the book down, but it was a good thing I didn’t. A departure from his Discworld series (as I’m sure every review says), the novel still is obviously one of Pratchett’s. Even the characters would fit right in to Discworld canon – Daphne could be Tiffany Aching of the Wee Free Men series, while Locaha is like Death (without the sense of humor). Stylistically, it is easier to read than the typical chapter-less Pratchett novel, but nonetheless enjoyable.

This is a story about two people from opposite ends of the world who find a way to survive through each other. It's a beautiful story, not a lot of action and fighting in it, but for this story, that's the way it should be. Mau and Daphne are perfect and you can't help but love them and relate to them in certain ways. Definitely read this book. Terry Pratchett knows how to write a good 'story'.

I'm not sure how obective I'll be on this since I read it in one day all in airports and airplanes. The writing is good, and brought tears to my eyes many times. The main characters (a "native" boy and a British girl) are wonderfully drawn and the way they face their tragedies and grow is engrossing. I was a bit discombobulated by not understanding the setting -- it seemed like a fantasy world but then like ours (it's actually an alternate history). If I could've settled into the personal drama without trying to figure out the overall context It would've been perfect.

It's a small island in the Pacific. The wave came. Everyone is destroyed except Mau.

There is a plague in England. A young girl is on a ship on the way to join her father. The ship is caught up in the same wave and lands in the middle of the island. Daphne and Mau struggle to put the Nation back together.

This book is not about a Pacific island. It is about man (science) vs. God (or god, as the case may be).

Excellent study of the age-old spiritual struggle after a devastating disaster.

Nation by Terry Pratchett is a book i highly recommend even though I have not finish it. Honestly at first this book was very random but once you dig in to this story the more you find yourself strap and attach to it. It begins with a story with many questions but the further you read your answers will be found. The main character Mau is someone in which i can really relate to which help increase my interest for this book. He's a kid with many questions as so am I....
