I love this book. It may look like manga, but it's not. The plot is so different, but it works. Everything in this book is amazing. At the end i was so shocked by the ending. If you read it you'll see what i mean. (P.S Billy....)

Gamer Girl was an amazing book! I loved it so much, I e-mailed the author just to tell her how much I was enjoying it. To my suprise, she replied telling me that she was happy to hear I liked it and hoped I liked the rest of the book when I finished it. Maddy reminded me a lot of myself, minus the Manga. Never really been a fan of anime. I'd recommend this book to anyone :D

The big "D" word. It wasn't really supposed to happen to Maddy Starr, but it did. her life was perfect one minute. Friends, perfect family, everything she wanted. Then her parents split, her mom dragged her and her sister Emily to the middle of nowhere to live with their grandma, and boy, does the first day of school go swell in the new town! Right away, Maddy is labeled as "freak girl" thanks to Maddy's grandma's smooth moves and has no friends. When her dad buys her a videogame for her birthday that opens up an online virtual world, she meets someone. Someone special. Sometimes the game can help her escape reality. But what is the game hiding, and more importantly, what will it open her eyes too, instead of a new friend? Best book ever! Love it!

I liked the main character, Maddy, a lot, and I liked that she could draw manga. I love anime and manga. I thought that it was so fitting that the popular guy was Sir Leo.

There are many readers who are interested in online gaming and manga. For these readers, this book would be a great fit. It follows a new student, Maddy, who immediately becomes an outcast at a new school. Following her passion for manga she starts a club which involves many other “outcasts” from the school.

Any student who has had to move and start at a new school will relate to Maddy. The author provides great realness to starting in a new school. Finding new friends in a school can be difficult and one that many students go through each year. Especially well written is the relationship Maddy tries to continue with her friends from her old school. “Out of sight, out of mind” is how things can go when friendships are split by one person moving. Having been a new student due to moving, it was very easy to connect with Maddy and the problems she went through.

One part of the story many readers can relate to is Maddy’s parents going through a divorce. As her parents split we see Maddy’s mom, Denise working two jobs and trying to support her two daughters while living with her mom. In contrast, the reader watches Maddy’s dad, Bob, become more distant and at one point feigns sick on a weekend he is supposed to pick up the girls (Maddy and her sister, Emily). Many readers can relate to this situation as more and more families experience divorce.

One of the disappointments of this book is the predictability. During the book Maddy becomes Allora in an online gaming environment called Fields of Fantasy. While playing the game Allora meets SirLeo and quickly develops a crush on him. In the real world Maddy develops a crush on Chad, a popular boy with bullies as friends. It doesn’t take many chapters to figure out that Chad is SirLeo even though this isn’t revealed until the very end of the book. There are a few more predictable moments throughout the book as well. For the reader expectedness can be disappointing especially, when a big part of the plot is figured out early on. For some readers this may cause them to put the book down instead of finishing it.

Overall, this book was a little disappointing to me. Between the predictability and slow plot line it was easy to put this book down. However, if the reader is interested in online gaming or manga he or she may find this book more appealing.

For quality I would give this book a 4Q. The book was easy to read with a lot of aspects teens would be able to relate to. The writing was clear and engaging. As for popularity, I would rate it a 4P. Teens interested in manga, online gaming, or any student who has had to move to a new school would find this very appealing. Even the reader who just picks this book by the cover or short description would find this book to be a good read.

I love this book. I'm glad she got a happy ending in the end. I wish there was a second book, but most books like these don't have sequels!
