Hawken shares a lot of good ideas on how to humanize capitalize and make it so that capitalism isn't the polar opposite of human rights and environmental sustainability. He does provide some real-life examples of where ideas similar to his have been applied, although the entire range of reforms he suggests have never been made reality, as far as I know. (I understand, though, that Costa Rica has made remarkable strides toward sustainability.)
Paul Hawken doesn't really offer any solutions regarding how to apply some of these reforms in the age of corporate globalization. Any nation--the U.S. included--would risk capital flight if it tried to force some of these reforms on corporations. Hawken's ideas would really only apply to economies that are contained within national borders. But I'm also not an economist or a businessperson, so perhaps Paul Hawken has a better grasp of the situation than I realize.”
